State of Athenians

For the first time in the history of man, one meets in Greece, more specifically in Athens, a state with a human face – democracy, since for the first time the state ensures the right to freedom, equality and life of the citizens. Provision is also made for the weaker classes by the distribution of spoils and the settlement of citizens as legatees in the conquered territories with the aim of ensuring that all citizens, and especially the poorest, secure a livelihood. Furthermore, since democracy required citizens to participate in its organs (Municipal Church, Parliament, Courts), it was natural and necessary that the maintenance of all these citizens and their families should be borne by the state, since during their term of office they could not work at the same time and attend their functions and their positions – that is why he paid them a salary. Also, when the wars ended, the great public works, like the Acropolis works, absorbed a large number of citizens in addition to the innumerable slaves.
