Mother Courage and Her Children is a drama written by Brecht in 1937-39 in exile in Sweden and staged for the first time in 1941 in Zurich. The story of the spinster Mana Courage, who tries to do small business with the war, but loses all three of her children, can be interpreted as a warning to ordinary people who hope that they will be able to cunningly handle situations and take advantage of the World War II, which had just broken out in Europe. At the same time, the project is also a warning to the Nordic countries whose businesses are looking to profit from this conflict. Most of all, however, Brecht seeks to provoke the public’s revulsion of war in general, and at the same time revulsion towards capitalist society, which in his view provokes it.
