The translation contained in this book is based on the text of Sappho’s poems in the Oxford editions (Oxford University Press 1968). The poems are divided into five thematic sections: 1) Sappho’s Appeals to the Goddess Aphrodite: In these poems, Sappho anxiously pleads with the goddess of beauty to grant her some requests. 2) Poems referring to Sappho’s family: Sappho worries about Charaxus, her brother, and is angry with the courtesan Doricha, who ruined him financially. She also speaks of her mother, and her daughter Cleida. 3) Poems dedicated to girls from Lesvos: In the poems of this category eroticism is prevalent, mainly towards Athida, but also irony towards other girls. 4) Wedding Poems: Through these poems, Sappho expresses the fear of the girl inexperienced in love, who after her marriage sees her virginity disappear, praises the beauties of the bride and groom and invites the world to take part in their wedding feast . He also praises the beautiful natural landscape, in which the wedding takes place. Poems with various themes: about love, about the Trojan War, about peace, about nature, etc.
